Benztropine for sleep
Medically reviewed by Drugs. Benztropine reduces the effects of certain chemicals in the body that may be unbalanced as a result of disease such as Parkinson'sdrug therapy, or other causes. Benztropine is used together with other medicines to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease muscle spasms, stiffness, tremors, poor muscle control.
Benztropine is also used to treat and prevent these symptoms when they are caused by drugs such as chlorpromazine Thorazinefluphenazine Prolixinperphenazine Trilafonand others. Using benztropine during pregnancy could harm the unborn baby.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while using benztropine. It is not known whether benztropine passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
It is best to take benztropine at bedtime, especially if you take this medicine only once per day. Follow your doctor's instructions. It may take up to 3 days before your symptoms improve. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse. Your mouth may feel dry while taking benztropine.
To prevent or relieve dry mouth, suck on a piece of sugar-free hard candy, chew sugar-free gum, drink water, chew on ice chips, or use a saliva substitute. Dry mouth may lead to gum disease or cavities. Brush and floss your teeth regularly and see a dentist for routine check-ups while you are taking benztropine.
You should not stop using any of your anti-Parkinson medications suddenly. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember.
Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose can cause headachesevere dizzinessanxietyconfusion, trouble swallowing, hot and dry skindilated pupils, weak pulse, irregular heartbeats, fainting, or seizure convulsions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.Not too many side effects but this med does interact with my other meds. Would like to decrease it without withdrawal symptoms. I am taking quetiapine fumarate mg generic for seroquel I ended up with a side effect where I had restless body syndrome.
My psychiatrist prescribed Benztropine MES 3 mg I take 3 1 mg tablets with my quetiapine fumarate at night to help me sleep its also for anti depression and bipolar. I had two brutal weeks of akathisia from Abilify. One mg of benztropine taken 3 times daily got rid of akathisia within 24 hours.
I was prescribed Cogentin, but Benztropine is the generic version and is what I took in order to fight off the side effects of Haldol. After taking 1MG of Benztropine with the Haldol at bedtime, my side-effects were worse. Whether it was from a combination of the two or what, I can't say. I already had problems with the movements of my body from the Haldol.

Overall, I felt worse after the Benztropine. I do not recommend this medicine to anybody or I no longer take it myself, and I am happier without it. Hydroxyzine should not be used in the first trimester of pregnancy. Studies that were done with mice and rats found an increased risk of birth defects. The risk to humans in the first trimester is unclear. Hydroxyzine may be used in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, but it should not be used during or just prior to labor.
Use of hydroxyzine during labor may increase seizure risk in infants, decrease fetal heart rate, and increase side effects when combined with narcotics. Regarding breast-feeding, use is not recommended since hydroxyzine does pass into breast milk. Infants who have received other antihistamines have experienced drowsiness, irritability, or unusual excitement. In addition, it may lower milk production in the mother.
Hydroxyzine may be taken with or without food. Take with food if you experience an upset stomach. Typically, your healthcare provider will limit the number of doses you should take in one day.
