There are two categories of requirements for all biology majors: biology courses and basic science support courses.

Some professional and graduate schools may not accept high school AP courses as substitutes for college introductory science courses e. In addition, students may select this concentration as preparation for professional degree programs in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine or for a career in biology education, biomedical research or fields that integrate biology with other disciplines such as business or law.
Students completing this concentration are encouraged to take at least two upper-level labs among the elective courses within this concentration. Students are encouraged to participate in a research experience or as an intern e. They should consult with their adviser regarding these opportunities. Specific requirements for the Cell and Molecular Biology concentration are listed under Requirements and outlined in the suggested Four-Year Plan of Study.
The Cell and Molecular Biology Concentration consists of units. All Biology majors must complete minimum 19 units toward the major at Towson University, with at least 10 of these units at the upper level. Courses taken to fulfill Ancillary Course requirements do not count toward units in residence.
Based on course availability and student needs and preferences, the selected sequences will probably vary from those presented below. Students should consult with their adviser to make the most appropriate elective choices. Consult your adviser.

Unit range totals are listed for options on a term-by-term basis. If you take the minimum number of units each term, you will not have the minimum units needed to graduate. You must review your overall progress toward your degree every term when you meet with your adviser.

All majors must fulfill the requirements outlined on the left. It is recommended, but not required, that Genetics be taken immediately after completing the level introductory sequence.
Students must complete five courses from the three categories below. To complete one of the three concentrations, at least four courses must be from the appropriate category and at least one from another category. To complete the Biology Major without a concentration, the five courses must include at least one course from each of the three categories.
Although some courses are listed in multiple categories, a student can only use a course towards one of the categories. If a student completes courses which make her eligible for more than one of the four majors then she may select which one is reflected on her transcript. The four majors are summarized in the following table:. Students may take any upper-level Biology lab courses for which they meet the pre- or co-requisite.
Students may also take laboratory courses at Columbia or other institutions to satisfy the lab requirement with permission from the Co-Chair. Enrollment in the year-long Guided Research and Seminar can be used to fulfill two of the three required upper-level labs. This course is only available as a Fall to Spring sequence. Seniors enrolled in this course to satisfy their lab requirement must additionally enroll in BIOL BC Senior Seminar in order to fulfill their capstone requirement.
Seniors may not take this course concurrently with Senior Thesis Research and Seminar, though it is fine to have taken it in your junior and senior years. In Senior Seminar, enrolled students participate in a seminar focusing on primary literature and compose and give a presentation on a senior thesis in the format of a literature review.
In Senior Thesis Research and Seminar, students complete an original research project in a lab, and compose and give a presentation on a senior thesis in the format of a primary research paper. They may, however, continue a project begun in their sophomore or junior years while enrolled in Guided Research and Seminar.
All majors, regardless of their track, must complete at least one semester of General Chemistry with laboratory and at least one semester of Organic Chemistry with laboratory. You will need to indicate the name of your Biology adviser and get the form signed by the Co-Chair. The following three Columbia departments each offer upper-level undergraduate courses that count towards the Biology major or minor at Barnard. If the course you are interested in is not listed, consult with the Co-Chair before enrolling in the course.
Research can fulfill a major requirement through enrollment in either of the following year-long courses:. It does, however, count toward your degree credit and GPA.
As a rule of thumb, you should be spending approximately 3 hours per week per credit on your research project. Transit time to your lab does not count toward research time. If you are interested in ecology, genetics, microbiology, or cellular, developmental, environmental or molecular biology, and want to develop a rigorous background in the sciences to prepare for graduate or professional school for science-related jobs, the Biology B.
The Department of Biology is part of the College of Arts and Sciencesand includes expert faculty who specialize in a wide range of disciplines within the biological sciences. The two degree options begin similarly, making it easy to adjust your path as your interests develop.
The department also offers two microbiology degrees: the Bachelor of Science in Microbiology B. The Biology B. Many Biology B. If you are interested in biology but want the flexibility to explore other academic disciplines, wish to teach middle school or high school biology, or desire to work in business, the Biology B.
Because a significant amount of chemistry coursework is required for the Biology B. To be successful in the Biology B. Students can choose to pursue either a general Biology B. There are three areas of concentration for you to choose from:. The fundamental goals of the areas of concentration are the same as those of the general Biology B. Your introductory courses will help you determine which if any area of concentration to pursue. All Biology majors complete 18 to 20 credit hours of core classes in biology, which include courses such as molecular biology, genetics, and evolution.
Biology B. Keep in mind that you will need a strong foundation in chemistry in order to successfully progress through your intermediate and upper-level biology coursework. Biology students get to choose many of their upper-level biology courses. Upper-level biology lectures and labs are offered in the following areas: microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry, ecology, the environment, zoology, and botany.

The program is held in Costa Rica over winter break and in the Cayman Islands in the spring.All students, including transfer students, must take at least 12 credit hours, including a minimum of 2 credit hours 6 class hours in laboratory work, within the Biology Department at UMass Boston.
These courses will be at the level or above unless the chair's approval is obtained for lower level courses. Biology,and do not fulfill this requirement. Moreover, organic chemistry,and does NOT count towards the residency requirement, notwithstanding the fact that 8 of those credits can count towards the fulfillment of the overall minimum of 20 credits upper level bio courses.
To recognize achievement in research, the Biology Department confers honors to some of its graduating seniors. Honors in Biology differs from honors in other programs and from the Honors College. Students who are majoring in biology are eligible for honors in biology as described by the requirements and criteria below. To receive honors in biology, a student must engage in supervised research while taking at least 3 credits of independent study BIOL or or BIOL The mentor supervising the undergraduate research may be either a UMass Boston faculty member in biology, chemistry, the School for the Environment, or another related discipline -- or an off-campus scientist with a UMass Boston biology faculty liaison.
Majors Biology / Upper Level Biology
Shortly before graduation spring or fallthe biology honors candidate presents the research in a poster session organized by the Biology Department.
The honors candidate also presents the research in a written honors thesis that is submitted to the Biology Department one week after the poster session. The honors student must also perform well in classes.
A cumulative grade point average of 3. Two months before graduation, the Biology Honors Committee screens potential candidates for honors in biology to ensure that both the GPA and research requirements are met. The final vote approving honors in biology is made at a special end-of-semester meeting of the entire biology faculty immediately following the poster presentations.

Biology Transfer Course Policy and Limitations Fully matriculated students no longer are permitted to take courses elsewhere and transfer them to UMass Boston. Notwithstanding, students who have a particularly pressing reason to take courses at other institutions may appeal this regulation.
That is done through the use of a prior approval form, obtained from the Registrar's Office and signed by the department chair or the departmental director of undergraduate advising, or the instructor of UMass Boston's equivalent course.
Biology Residency Requirements All students, including transfer students, must take at least 12 credit hours, including a minimum of 2 credit hours 6 class hours in laboratory work, within the Biology Department at UMass Boston.The Biology major emphasizes a broad training in biology by requiring an additional six upper-level biology elective courses, with at least one in each of three areas corresponding to different levels of biological organization: environmental, organismal, and molecular.
This program offers the broadest education of the four majors, prepares students for a wide variety of careers in the life sciences, and meets the requirements for admission at most graduate and pre-professional schools.
